Edge Detection

What is edge detection?

In edge detection processing, the most significant areas are detected through changes in brightness. Areas where brightness changes significantly are considered places where the shape or material quality of the object of inspection changes significantly, and they are edge portions in many cases. Therefore, this kind of detection processing is called edge detection processing.

Edge detection processing is the most basic method of image processing. In edge detection processing, edge peaks are extracted by differentiating an object of inspection that is in image form, and edge features of the object, such as the edge portion position, presence, number, length, and direction, are measured.

What can be done using edge detection

Position detection

Position detection

the target object image on the left

  1. Presence
  2. Count
  3. Width
  4. Position
  5. Others

* This is a basic detection method that can be
used for a wide variety of applications.

Edge position and the like for an object of inspection in image form can be specified.

As if applying fixed regulations to the object of inspection, two processing object regions called detection lines--one lengthwise and one widthwise--are set, and an inspection is conducted to check where edges are on the detection lines. The position of the object of inspection is specified by making the Y coordinate of the edge that can be obtained from the lengthwise detection line and the X coordinate of the edge that can be obtained from the widthwise detection line the position of the object of inspection.

Measurements of width, height, gaps, and the like

The length (1/4 pixel) and the like of an object of inspection in image form can be measured.

A detection line that stretches over the object of inspection is assigned, and two edges on the detection line are detected. The width, height, gap, etc. of the object of inspection is measured by calculating the distance between these edges.

Contour (external form) portion inspections

It can be determined whether or not edges exist on an object of inspection in image form.

An inspection is conducted by specifying a plurality of detection lines that intersect with the contour of the object of inspection at right angles and measuring the degree to which the standard edge placement is deviated from. The figure shows an example of detection line specification (left) and an enlarged view of a defect (right). In the defect portion, the distance from the reference position indicated by the dotted line is large. This distance is used to assess the extent of defects and to make a pass/fail decision.

Contour detection and connector lead inspection are examples of inspection tools that employ edge detection theory.
