Diffuse reflection occurs in scratched area and image in the area gets blurry, Higher contrast can be gained by making a shadow of scratch using regular reflection light

Detection of gentle bulge or dent

Coaxial lighting to be precise, includes other factor than vertical component, which cannot cast a clear shadow over gentle bulge and dent and these defects will not be seen clearly, Clearer image can be gained by making a shadow of bulge using regular reflection light.
